The ministers of justice and of home affairs of the EU member states agree accession of the Principality of Liechtenstein to the Schengen area which came into force with a ceremony on 19 December 2011.

At the EU summit, Croatia signed the accession treaty for membership of the European Union. After the accession has been ratified, Croatia will become a member of the EU as of the middle of 2013.

Switzerland and the EU have started negotiations on cabotage law. This cabotage would permit Swiss airlines to operate flights within a single EU state (for example on the Paris to Nice route). The airlines of EU member states would also have the same rights for domestic flights within Switzerland

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey meets the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, the President of European Commission José Manuel Barroso and the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek in Brussels to discuss current issues. She agreed with the President of the EU Commission to define in greater detail the holistic and coordinated approach in the continuation and further development of relationship between Switzerland and the EU.
