The Agreement on education of 2010 ensures Switzerland's full and direct participation in the EU's education, vocational training and youth programmes, "Lifelong Learning" and "Youth in Action". The Agreement grants Swiss citizens equal access to all mobility and co-operation projects within these programmes and improves opportunities for professional internships and extracurricular activities abroad in the framework of a study programme. On this basis, Swiss education institutions are now able to develop or intensify their cross-border contacts. Until official participation began in 2011, Swiss involvement was limited to indirect participation in individual EU education programmes on the basis of arrangements reached with EU project co-ordinators or partner institutions. This kind of indirect and project-based participation had existed since the mid-1990s.
